January 2025 officially marks my 12 year weight loss/fitness anniversary. I can’t believe it’s been this long since I started Beachbody Insanity in my basement lol. I remember putting the Insanity calendar up against the wall to keep track of my workouts and working out 6-7x a week.
When I tell you those high intensity workouts kicked my a**, it really did. I don’t really miss them because now I’ve found workouts that are enjoyable for me but every year when the New Year comes around, I become grateful for past Sam for sticking through some of the hardest times in her life after all the diets she’s done. To celebrate her, I am going to share with you lessons I’ve learned to keep me consistent I hope they are helpful to you in your weight loss/fitness journey.
I know I know. I sound like those people that are telling you “money doesn’t make you happy” when really, it can. Same goes for your body too but what I’m trying to say is— if you don’t work on the way you speak to yourself right now, you can change your body as much as you want BUT that dialogue will ALWAYS be there.
One of the reasons why I love the PROCESS of my journey so much is because, the way I spoke to myself started to change over time. I used to hate looking at myself in the mirror since all I would ever do was lift up my shirt and squeeze my stomach fat. I wanted to get rid of it soo bad because I thought it would make me happier. But guess what? The moment I got abs, it didn’t change how I felt in the mirror. I still wanted a lower body fat percentage but at that point, I couldn’t go any lower because that would mean I needed to restrict my calories and HELLO, I was barely eating anything. I was eating 1200 calories a day doing Insanity so it didn’t make sense.
After getting abs, I started building my glutes, arms and back. I got to what you can call the “destination” of my dream body but it didn’t feel like the DREAM because of the way I spoke to myself. Not gonna lie, looking back at these pics, I really wished I appreciated my body more vs fixing one body part after another but hopping from one diet to another didn’t help me feel better either (this is a story for a different day where I am going to share my entire weight loss journey with you and all the diets I’ve tried because I’ve done the if it fits your macros, keto, tea detox cleanse, whole 30, and I’ve even gone down the route of cutting, bulking, powerlifting, sooo much more!!)
Anyways, the point of all of this comes to this realization as I was reflecting on my 12 year anniversary— instead of aiming to be happy about your body, aim to be proud of it. As much as I wish I could change the way I spoke to myself back then, if it wasn’t for her, I wouldn’t be this proud of my body today. I wouldn’t feel as connected to it after being disconnected to it for years.
I wouldn’t be sharing these little nuggets with you or be able to empathize with my clients who are in that journey right now. So yes, I get the hype of the new year, new me, new bod but I also want you to focus on being in this journey for the long haul. And that will require you to speak to yourself nicely, to reach for proudness of your body over happiness because your body will always be changing.
Yes, even after you lose the weight, you will want different goals for yourself like getting stronger, running a 5K or 10K, doing a pull-up, so much more. So you must let it evolve with you otherwise your journey will become stagnet and all about losing weight only when really, that can be your initial goal but it is not will keep you going for years. I am writing to you as a person who LOVES the new year resolution cause I am that gal. That’s how this all started.
Welps, I hope you enjoy this first blog entry of mine. I would love to know what new year goals do you have for yourself? Comment below.
Talk to you next time.
Love,
Sam
